St Mungo's

Updated: Oct 28

During my kayak circumnavigation of the UK and Ireland I collaborated with St Mungo's, a charity that gives assistance to homeless in the south of England, to raise funds for their operations.

In 2023 St. Mungo's helped more than 28,000 people, by providing them with emergency accommodation and skills training so that those who have fallen on hard times have a chance to get back on their feet.

Our collaboration consisted of the following:

  1. People following my progress were invited to sponsor 1 mile of my journey with a $5 donation to St. Mungo's through my "Just Giving" page. As a fun jest, I "bestowed" the name of the donor onto a geographic feature of the coastline in the same manor as the great explorers during the age of discovery. Every donation received a special Facebook post proclaiming the name change for a particular bay, headland, sea cliff, or body of water, noting that the donor was now a patron to my great endeavor, and incentivized more people to donate.

  2. In the spirit of giving back, to every person who helped me during the journey, I gave them a beanie or hat with the expedition logo, and I also personally made a $5 donation to St. Mungo's in their name. This was my way to repay the debt of gratitude that I owed to the people of Britain and Ireland. Folks from all walks of life invited me into their homes to spend time with their families. They gave me food, shelter, guidance, and lifelong friendships; their generosity was essential for the success of my expedition.

In total, my expedition raised $1,440 for St Mungo's from 79 supporters.
