It can be a bit confusing for a first time arrival in Nanaimo by kayak. There are two options, downtown and out of town.
The downtown option is to arrive at the steps of the Frank Ney Statue. You will almost certainly not be able to paddle into the Swy-a-Lana lagoon, unless the tide is really high. You can then get your kayak on your cart, and walk to a hotel.
It's an up hill walk, to the Best Western Hotel , but the management were perfectly fine with me showing up with an 18 foot kayak, and putting it in the ball room for the night. I don't think I was the first one to do that. Great folks, I am happy for all the help they gave me.
Your second option is to stay a little out of town at the Waterfront Suites & Marina Hotel. It's a bit cheaper, and there is a very convenient though somewhat hidden put out point along the boardwalk. If you stay here, try to get a room on the ground floor where you can keep an eye on your kayak, which will have to stay outside.
